As a small business consultant one of my favorite things to read is the small business section in the Wall Street Journal. If you happened to catch it today, there was an article with a humorous title about a not so humorous subject.

McBrand Yourself!

Everyone and anyone are branding themselves nowadays- literally! Individual people have websites for themselves; branding their name, values, and their strengths. I recently read an article on CNN where they recommended that everyone find the time to brand themselves, to get themselves out there, “so that if someone needs that expertise, they’ll come to you first.”
As a small business, this same principle applies. Many of the best and brightest companies find themselves struggling to make an impact in their industry because they are competing with the big dogs. Not only are they competing for business, they are competing for talent. No one knows who they are. Problem is- they don’t have a multi-million dollar marketing budget.

Quick to Fire, Quicker to Hire

It is no surprise that most businesses in this country have been cutting their staff and becoming lean during this recession. Keeping costs down and using this recession as a time to reevaluate staff and company practices has been key for many businesses. This morning Justin Lahart writes in the Wall Street Journal about how “the rapid pace at which businesses shed jobs during the recession comes with a flip side: Workers will need to be hired back quickly as the economy improves”.
