Added Value in Tech Consulting

October 30, 2009

A successful project is dependent on accurate forecasting, competitive bidding, appropriate funding, and timeliness of completion.  Your reputation also depends on customer satisfaction and differentiation. I’d like to re-visit an article written by Jennifer Gill for Inc. that speaks to your prospects about what to look for in a Tech Consultant.

Taking the following points into account will not only be vital to winning new business, but also in creating long term relationships with your clients, and ensuring a reputation of quality.

  • Issue regular progress reports during the project and be able to make adjustments as needed.
  • Present a range of products from different makers and discuss the pros and cons of each one.
  • Be upfront about the services that are provided and the commission received.
  • Understand the technical needs of your client as well as their industry, especially if there are regulatory requirements for data.
  • Share your expertise so that the client can manage without you after the project’s completion.
  • Provide on-site training, full documentation of the system, and collaboration with your client’s IT team.
  • Have an assigned project manager to ensure timely completion and expected budget allocation.
  • Give your best estimate of costs for labor, equipment, and training; provide an explanation if the scope of the project broadens, and negotiate the fee accordingly.

Feel free to share your best practices and success stories from your experience in Tech Consulting.
